What generates the weak-Planck hierarchy - is the fundamental scale of quantum gravity near a TeV?

The fundamental scale of gravity lies near 1 TeV: Standard Model fields are confined to a (3+1)-dimensional brane while gravity propagates in n >= 2 large extra dimensions (from ~0.1 fermi up to ~1 mm), the apparent 4D Planck scale being the volume dilution of TeV-scale gravity; realized either purely field-theoretically (ADD) or as TeV-scale type-I string theory with SM fields as open strings on a D3-brane, this eliminates the weak-Planck hierarchy without low-energy supersymmetry or technicolor.

Widened from the type-I string embedding to the generic ADD large-extra-dimensions scenario; gave up the string-vs-field-theoretic distinction - no curated observation (O-3, O-7, O-43) tests string-specific features such as Regge excitations.

String embedding of the ADD large-extra-dimensions proposal (companion to hep-ph/9803315). The observed weakness of gravity at long distances is attributed to the large volume of the extra dimensions in which only closed-string gravity propagates, while SM matter is automatically localised on a D3-brane. The scenario requires an O(1) string coupling and new dimensions much larger than the weak scale.
