Why do the measured SM Higgs parameters lie so close to the stability-metastability boundary?

Both parameters of the Higgs potential (m^2 and lambda) lie near critical boundaries separating the electroweak phase from inhospitable phases; this quasi-criticality is not a numerical accident but the signature of an underlying mechanism - e.g. a multiverse whose parameter distribution is dynamically peaked near critical lines (self-organized criticality), or transplanckian dynamics driving lambda(M_Pl) toward zero.

§5 (Conclusions)

The authors’ interpretive proposal on top of the NNLO result: near-criticality of m^2 (the hierarchy problem) and of lambda (the stability boundary) may both point to an attractor critical point of an underlying statistical system, with the multiverse the natural candidate. Uncertain and explicitly speculative in the paper.
