Web search (via WebSearch/WebFetch) starting from the brief’s named canonical anchors (Liu/Gao China CDC paper + its 2022 preprint; Crits-Christoph raccoon-dog metagenomics + its Cell/preprint/Zenodo versions; WHO-China joint report; Débarre’s reanalyses). From each anchor: (a) searched for the specific preprint→published-version pair to get both nodes and correct DOIs; (b) searched “author + title” combinations to resolve exact authorship/venue/date where the general query returned only secondary coverage; (c) used the Semantic Scholar API directly (api.semanticscholar.org/graph/v1/paper/DOI:...) for citation counts, since WebSearch summaries don’t reliably surface them; (d) followed the dispute forward from Bloom’s first paper → Débarre’s reply → Bloom’s rejoinder, and forward from the Cell paper → the retraction letter that appeared the same day; (e) checked NCBI BioProject and NGDC GSA pages directly for the underlying raw-data accession, since no paper’s abstract states it cleanly. Slice shape
~12 sources, genuinely two chains rather than 12 independent findings: a straight supersession chain (WHO 2021 → China CDC 2022 preprint → China CDC 2023 Nature paper → 2023 raw-data release) and a live three-round methodological dispute over one derived claim (raccoon-dog co-location) fought entirely on that single released dataset (Crits-Christoph × 3 versions vs. Bloom × 2 vs. Débarre × 1, plus an adversarial retraction letter). I went looking for, and could not find, (a) a clean primary citation for the original Jan-2020 in-market press-conference sampling numbers beyond what the WHO report reports secondhand, and (b) any China-side or Chinese-academic rebuttal to Bloom/Nickels — every reanalysis and critique I found on both sides is Western-authored; if a Chinese-government or China-CDC response to the raccoon-dog dispute exists, I did not surface it and it may be a real gap in the slice rather than a search failure on my part.
