The quantitative lifetime criterion that turns Hawking’s qualitative evaporation claim into numbers. Scaled down to an LHC-scale hole (~TeV ~ 10^-21 g, with the appropriate higher-dimensional generalization), the same rate calculation underlies the standard statement that such a hole would evaporate in ~10^-27 s. Conditional on the Hawking emission formalism being correct.
