Started from the canonical anchors named in the slice brief (Xiao 2021, Freuling, WHO-China report, Guan 2003) and confirmed/extended each via: (1) targeted WebSearch per anchor plus obvious adjacent-species queries (mink, hamster, ferret/cat/dog, civet, pangolin, MERS camel); (2) OpenAlex API (api.openalex.org/works) for authoritative venue/date/citation-count/author metadata on every candidate, cross-checked against the search snippets; (3) WebFetch on the two sources where I needed methodology detail beyond the search snippet (Xiao 2021 via PMC to confirm it’s primary survey data, not a reanalysis; Freuling 2020 via PMC for exact study design). Snowballed from the WHO-China report’s “recommended further studies” list (farmed ferret-badger/civet/mink/raccoon-dog surveys) and from citation trails around the Guan 2003 / Kan 2005 civet-market pair toward the MERS camel analogue. Did not do a systematic database search beyond this; relied on search-engine coverage + citation counts as a proxy for “did I miss something load-bearing.”

Slice shape & gaps

~13 sources, cleanly split across five sub-questions: what was for sale (1 source, but it’s comprehensive), experimental/natural susceptibility (5 sources covering raccoon dog/mink/cat/dog/ferret/hamster + a computational cross-check), the intermediate-host surveillance record (3 sources, uniformly negative except the pangolin isolation), human serosurveys (1 source), and the SARS-1/MERS precedent (3 sources). The clearest gap: I could not find any dedicated SARS-CoV-2 experimental-infection study for civets specifically — the SARS-1 intermediate host has, as far as I could find, never been directly challenged with SARS-CoV-2 in the way raccoon dogs, mink, hamsters, ferrets and cats have; Damas et al.’s computational ACE2 score is the only available proxy. A second, softer gap: I found no post-2021 dedicated farmed-wildlife (raccoon dog/mink/civet) serosurvey conducted specifically in response to the 2022-23 market-metagenomics controversy that would sit in my lane rather than slice A’s — if one exists it would strengthen the negative-surveillance case considerably.
