Metagenomic sequencing and virus isolation from Malayan pangolins (Manis javanica) seized in Guangdong/Guangxi anti-smuggling operations identified SARS-CoV-2-related coronaviruses forming two sub-lineages. One pangolin-CoV lineage shows strong receptor-binding-domain similarity to SARS-CoV-2 (higher than bat RaTG13’s RBD) despite lower whole-genome identity than RaTG13; authors isolated live virus from pangolin tissue, not just sequence. relevance_note: the strongest actual isolation-based evidence for a non-bat intermediate host anywhere in the SARS-CoV-2 lineage, even though pangolins were absent from Xiao et al.’s Wuhan-market sales survey — the “pangolins carry a close relative but weren’t sold in Wuhan” tension is itself a live thread in the intermediate-host search. A closely competing paper, Lam et al. 2020 Nature (same finding, overlapping pangolin seizure samples, published within a month), was read but not separately minted for budget — flagged as a gap.
