The same China-CDC Huanan-market environmental sampling campaign later released metagenomically and re-analysed by S-35 (Crits-Christoph) and S-39 (Bloom) — hence D-1. The report frames the contamination as “compatible with introduction of the virus through infected people, infected animals or contaminated products”, and its conclusion leans to human shedding.

A-34 - Widespread market surface contamination is compatible with human shedding and does not by itself demonstrate an infected-animal source

Surface and drain contamination at a busy market records where virus was deposited, not who shed it. The positives concentrate on frequently-handled surfaces of product stalls and in drainage/sewer samples — exactly the pattern expected if infected humans (vendors and the many customers) shed virus in a crowded indoor space. Three sources are a priori possible: (a) infected people, (b) infected animals, (c) contaminated products. Since every one of the 457 animal-related samples tested negative, source (a) is already sufficient to account for the environmental contamination, so the environmental positives cannot on their own demonstrate that an infected animal was present in the market. The report makes exactly this agnostic move — contamination “compatible with introduction of the virus through infected people, infected animals or contaminated products” — and its conclusion attributes it to “shedding from infected people”. (This is a validity point about what the co-location of viral RNA can and cannot show; it directly parallels the S-35 vs S-39 dispute over the metagenomic version of the same data.)

Validity assessment — approved (checked)

Reconstruction. P1: surface/drain contamination records where virus was deposited, not who shed it. P2: three sources are a priori possible — infected people, infected animals, contaminated products. P3: infected humans (vendors + many customers) were present and could shed exactly this pattern. Load-bearing step: since one available source (human shedding) already suffices to account for all 73 positives, the positives cannot on their own demonstrate that an infected animal was present.

Evaluation. Valid underdetermination inference: an observation explained equally well by an available alternative cannot be a demonstration of the favoured cause. The conclusion is appropriately modest (“cannot on their own demonstrate”), not “no animal was present.” Probed defeater: does the stall-level clustering (aquatic/cold-chain/meat vendors) demonstrate an animal source? No — high-traffic product stalls are also where human handling/shedding concentrates, so the clustering is equally compatible with human deposition. The clause “with all 457 animal samples negative, human shedding alone suffices” is not doing the logical work (human sufficiency holds regardless of the animal-sample result) but it does not weaken the inference either. Whether human shedding is the better explanation is a step-8 magnitude question; the inferential step holds.

Table 4 species include rabbit/hare (104), stray cat (80, incl. faeces), snake (80), hedgehog (67), muntjac (18), dog (17), badger (16, frozen carcasses, identity not DNA-barcoded), bamboo rat (15), etc. Critically, the report states sampling drew on “unsold goods kept in refrigerators and freezers” and vector animals — i.e. the live wildlife sold in December had already been removed at market closure (1 Jan 2020). The report also claims “no verified reports of live mammals being sold around 2019”, which later market-metagenomic work disputes.
