Reviews the evolutionary history of furin cleavage sites across sarbecoviruses and argues that, given how sparsely bat coronaviruses had been (and remain) sampled, the field cannot currently rule a natural route to SARS-CoV-2’s FCS in or out. Pushes back on treating the FCS’s rarity among sampled relatives as strong evidence in either direction. relevance_note: a peer-reviewed, comparatively measured statement that the FCS’s natural-vs-engineered status is genuinely unresolved by current sampling, used by lab-leak-sympathetic and agnostic readings alike.
