From January 1985 to May 1987, 65 foodborne SE outbreaks (2,119 cases, 11 deaths) were reported in the US Northeast; of the 35 outbreaks with an identified food vehicle, 27 (77%) were traced to Grade A shell eggs or egg-containing foods. The implicated eggs were intact, uncracked, and properly refrigerated.

The central attribution finding, with hard endpoints (11 deaths). The intact/refrigerated condition of the implicated eggs is what distinguishes this from classic cracked/soiled-egg salmonellosis.
