In Apoe-/- mice, a high-choline (1.0%) diet augmented atherosclerosis nearly 3-fold versus control; broad-spectrum antibiotics reduced plasma TMAO more than 100-fold and completely inhibited the choline-induced increases in atherosclerosis, aortic macrophage content, and CD36 expression.
