In an F2 intercross of atherosclerosis-prone and -resistant Apoe-/- mice, hepatic FMO3 expression (the enzyme oxidizing TMA to TMAO) correlated positively with atherosclerotic lesion area and plasma TMAO and negatively with plasma HDL, and the FMO3-region SNP rs3689151 associated with atherosclerosis (Kruskal-Wallis P<1e-6, dose-dependent by C57BL/6J allele).
