In the Harvard cohorts a significant interaction was found between egg consumption and prevalent type 2 diabetes on CVD risk (P for interaction <0.001), but egg intake (>=1/day vs <1/month) was not significantly associated with CVD within participants with T2D (HR 1.06, 0.81-1.39) nor within those without T2D (0.93, 0.81-1.06). No interaction was found for age, BMI, physical activity, smoking, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, family history of MI, statin use, or the Alternative Healthy Eating Index.

The only significant effect-modifier found among the tested variables was type 2 diabetes status — relevant to the ‘for whom’ question — although neither diabetes stratum on its own showed a significant egg-CVD association.
