Summary: Randomized crossover trial, n=29 type-2-diabetic patients completing (33 enrolled; Mexico/US sites), comparing a 5-week egg-based breakfast vs. a 5-week oatmeal-based breakfast (3-week washout). Plasma TNF-α and AST were lower during the egg period than the oatmeal period; no adverse change in other cardiometabolic risk markers (lipids, glucose) occurred during the egg period. Outcome is a surrogate inflammatory/lipid/glycemic endpoint.
Relevance: Diabetes-specific RCT showing one egg/day does not worsen — and by some markers improves — cardiometabolic status versus a carbohydrate-heavy breakfast; supports the pro-egg side of the T2D heterogeneity question, but from a heavily egg-industry-funded lab.
