First prospective study of egg intake and incident type 2 diabetes, run in parallel in two large US cohorts: 20,703 men from the Physicians’ Health Study I (1982-2007) and 36,295 women from the Women’s Health Study (1992-2007), both free of diabetes/CVD/cancer at baseline, egg intake by FFQ. Multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios for incident T2D comparing >=7 eggs/week to <1/week were 1.58 (95% CI not fully reported in abstract) in men and 1.77 in women; associations attenuated somewhat after adjusting for dietary cholesterol, suggesting cholesterol as a candidate mediator. This is the founding primary of the “US cohorts find elevated eggT2D risk” side of the later region-heterogeneity finding. relevance_note: the earliest and most-cited US primary establishing eggincident-T2D risk elevation; anchors one side of the US-vs-Asia contrast.
