Prospective cohort of 21,275 male US physicians from Physicians’ Health Study I, egg intake by abbreviated food questionnaire, mean follow-up 20.4 years, 1,084 incident heart-failure cases. Egg consumption up to 6/week was not associated with incident HF, but ≥1/day was: vs <1 egg/week, adjusted HR 1.28 (1.02-1.61) for 1 egg/day and 1.64 (1.08-2.49) for ≥2 eggs/day, adjusting for BMI, smoking, alcohol, exercise, AF, hypertension, valvular disease, hypercholesterolemia. Results were similar restricting to HF without antecedent MI. relevance_note: A named harm-finding anchor for slice 1 — shows a heart-failure-specific harm signal concentrated at high (≥1/day) intake in an otherwise healthy male physician cohort; shares its underlying PHS-I data basis with the companion Djoussé & Gaziano 2008 AJCN paper on CVD/mortality (mint separately, same cohort).
