Prospective cohort of 21,327 male US physicians from Physicians’ Health Study I, egg intake by abbreviated food questionnaire, mean follow-up 20 years: 1,550 incident MIs, 1,342 incident strokes, 5,169 deaths. Egg consumption was not associated with incident MI or stroke in multivariate Cox regression, but was positively associated with all-cause mortality in a clear dose-response: adjusted HR (vs <1 egg/wk) 0.94, 1.03, 1.05, 1.23 for 1, 2-4, 5-6, ≥7 eggs/wk respectively (P-trend <0.0001); the association was roughly twice as strong among diabetic subjects (HR 2.01, 1.26-3.20 comparing highest to lowest category; P-interaction=0.09). relevance_note: Direct evidence for the paper’s own conclusion (“infrequent egg consumption does not influence CVD risk, but egg consumption raises mortality, especially in diabetics”) — the mortality/diabetic-interaction half of the pair with the same group’s HF paper (Djoussé & Gaziano 2008 Circulation), same PHS-I cohort/data basis.
