Pan-European EPIC cohort, 409,885 participants across 9 European countries, diet by validated questionnaire calibrated with 24-hour recalls, mean follow-up 12.6 years, 7,198 incident IHD cases (5,392 non-fatal MI, 1,806 fatal IHD). Egg consumption showed a modest inverse association with IHD (HR 0.93, 95% CI 0.88-0.99 per 20g/day increment of calibrated intake), alongside a positive association for red/processed meat (HR 1.19-1.25 per 100g/day) and no clear association for most other animal foods; the egg association became non-significant after excluding the first 4 years of follow-up, consistent with reverse-causation/pre-clinical-illness bias rather than a robust protective effect. relevance_note: The main pan-European (as opposed to single-country) null-to-mildly-protective anchor for slice 1, and the family the brief pairs with EPIC-Oxford for balance against the US harm-finding cohorts.
