Randomised crossover trial in 29 postmenopausal women (50-68y) and 13 older men (60-80y): 3 whole eggs/day (640 mg cholesterol) vs. an equal-volume cholesterol-free egg substitute, 30 days per arm. Used NMR spectroscopy to characterise LDL/HDL particle size and number rather than just cholesterol mass. Egg feeding shifted the LDL particle distribution toward larger, less-atherogenic particles and increased large HDL particles (both more pronounced in hyper-responders), and raised plasma lutein and zeaxanthin. Its headline is the population-level particle-profile and carotenoid shift, though it also stratifies by responder status as a secondary analysis (that stratification itself belongs to slice 5, not re-extracted here). relevance_note: One of the few primaries in this slice using lipoprotein particle size/number (not just LDL-C mass) as the surrogate endpoint, in an elderly population, with disclosed egg-industry funding.
