Standalone Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) analysis (distinct from ARIC’s contribution to Zhong 2019’s 6-cohort pooling): 14,153 Black and white US adults aged 45-64 from 4 US communities, diet by FFQ at baseline (1987-1989) and again at Exam 3, averaged; mean 13-year follow-up, 1,140 incident heart-failure hospitalizations/deaths. Per 1-serving/day increment, HF risk was lower with whole-grain intake (HR 0.93, 0.87-0.99) but higher with egg intake (HR 1.23, 1.08-1.41) and high-fat dairy (1.08, 1.01-1.16); the egg and dairy associations were independent of the other 5 food categories examined (fruit/veg, fish, nuts, red meat also modeled, none significant). relevance_note: A second, standalone-ARIC harm signal for heart failure specifically (paralleling the Djoussé PHS and Larsson Swedish HF findings), using different exposure/outcome windows than Zhong’s pooled ARIC contribution.
