Nationally representative US cohort of 9,734 adults aged 25-74 (the NHANES I Epidemiologic Follow-up Study), egg intake categorized as none/<1, 1-6, or >6 eggs/week, 20-year follow-up. Comparing >6 to <1 egg/week, no significant association with any stroke (RR 0.9, 0.7-1.1), ischemic stroke (0.9, 0.7-1.1), or coronary artery disease (1.1, 0.9-1.3) after adjusting for age, sex, race, serum cholesterol, BMI, diabetes, systolic BP, education, and smoking. In a diabetic subgroup, however, >6 eggs/week was associated with roughly doubled CAD risk (RR 2.0, 95% CI 1.0-3.8) — the same diabetic-interaction pattern reported in the Harvard/PHS cohorts. relevance_note: A genuinely distinct, older, nationally-representative US cohort (not ARIC/NHS/PHS/MESA-derived) giving a null general-population result with the same diabetic-subgroup harm signal seen elsewhere.
